Brand Park Hike

This hike follows a wide fire road that climbs 800 feet from the base of Brand Park in Glendale to the ridge of the Verdugo Mountains. Or you can take the trail from the statue. Your reward is a lookout with sweeping views of the Los Angeles Basin and the San Fernando Valley. In the winter and spring, a detour along a stream to the base of a waterfall adds another easy half-mile to the hike. Brand Park, at the base of the Verdugo Mountains in Glendale, is on the grounds of an estate known as El Mirador. Today, it’s a meticulously kept neighborhood park, with a baseball field, basketball courts, picnic areas, library, and Japanese tea garden. It gets crowded on weekends with families, Little League teams, and exercise hounds, but I have never had a problem finding a parking space in the lot.

  1. Do you know what the concrete blocks are up the steep portion of the American Green Cross trail? They look like footings of...something?
