Mount Wilson from Chantry Flat/Sturtevant Falls

I found this great book with 100 hikes in the San Gabriel Mountains
and I am out to hike them all.

Check out photos from the first one... Mt Wilson, Altadena. 9 miles each way; 4500' elevation gain. In 1864 Benjamin Wilson built the first trail (named after him Mt. Wilson). 1889 it was a four foot wide toll-trail for .50 a rider, .25 per hiker. In 1912 it was used as the roadway to transport the 100-inch telescope to the mountaintop. In 1964 Metromedia Inc, purchased the entire mountaintop from the Mt Wilson Hotel Co. The old hotel was torn down and in its place arose a Skyline Park, complete with pavilion, a children's zoo, and picnic areas. In 1976 it was deeded to the Forest Service and today those features are unrecognizable.

Directions: From the Foothill Freeway (I-210) in Arcadia, take the Santa Anita Avenue exit and drive north to Chantry Flat, 4.6 miles. A National Forest Adventure Pass is required for parking. The vehicle gate for Chantry Flat Road is open from 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 p.m. There is a sign at the trailhead showing the trail route. Enjoy.
